Locals at a village pub prevented a likely car crash after removing part of a tree which fell onto a busy road during a storm.
The storm on Monday evening had caused a large branch from an old tree in the Firs business park in Whitchurch to come crashing down blocking the A413, a major link road between Buckingham and Aylesbury.
Punters in The White Swan heard the loud cracking sound followed by a large crash nearby.
One of them, Chris Thomas, said: “When we heard the noise a group of us wandered outside as we were curious to see what had happened.
“When we saw a branch had come down and it was blocking the main road and was very close to both a blind bend and a junction we decided we had to act.”
The team of Neale Baker, Caroline Baker, Mike Harris, Yvette and Heidi Smith and Carrie and Chris Thomas, White Swan landlord Andy and his son not only removed the branch from the road but also ensured the traffic could negotiate the obstruction safely.
Mr Thomas said: “A group of us focused on warning the approaching vehicles of the danger, by stopping the traffic and diverting people around the entrance to Swan Close to bypass the fallen branch.
“Another group of us concentrated on moving the branch and clearing the road. We are very grateful to Buster Bond, a farmer who lives in the village, who collected his chainsaws and safety equipment to enable us to cut the tree branch into small chunks which we could then move to the side of the road.
“After an hour or so of hard work, we managed to make the road safe again. Although the highways department did attend, they left when they saw that we had already dealt with the problem.”
Mr Thomas added that this situation showed the importance of pubs in local communities.
He said: “This goes to demonstrate the importance of pubs in local communities, especially in villages.
“It also shows the power of community and sense of spirit that goes with a decent local pub, as we put ourselves out for the sake of others.”
“Afterwards we all headed back inside for a pint, which we were certainly ready for!”
