A prestigious award has been given to the district council for its ‘robust and structured’ approach to councillor development.
Aylesbury Vale District Council is the first of its kind in Bucks to receive the South East Charter for Elected Member Development, designed to ‘help deliver leadership and raise service levels’.
The charter status lasts for three years and was awarded following an assessment to ensure the council met core standards. This includes a commitment to developing and supporting councillors to enhance their skills or learn new ones.
Work to achieve the status included members taking part in a training programme, briefing sessions for new councillors and developing a members’ e-learning package.
Councillor Pam Pearce, cabinet member for community matters, said: “Our members come from a wide variety of backgrounds, have much to offer and get involved in a range of interesting work.
“There was a lot of hard work put in by both members and officers to get this far, which is a demonstration of the commitment from the organisation to provide both training and development opportunities to fulfil our varied roles for the benefit of the community as a whole.”
