MP David Lidington hopes Aylesbury will one day become as gastronomically famous for its snails as it is for its ducks.
The Aylesbury MP visited Aylesbury Escargots where owner Sophie Wharton explained the processes involved in farming snails and believes her business may be the only remaining farm of its kind in the UK.
She is hoping to harvest the remaining 340,000 free range snails from this year’s crop in the next fortnight.
Aylesbury Escargots supplies a large number of chefs throughout the UK, especially those based in London and has had enquires from some European countries.
It is also hoping to have a range of ‘oven ready’ products on sale in supermarkets in the future.
Mr Lidingon said: “Having never visited a snail farm before this was an entirely new experience and it was fascinating to visit Aylesbury Escargots to learn about the snail farming process as well as their plans for the future.
“Hopefully in time Aylesbury Escargots’ snails will be as popular and renowned as Aylesbury Duck and will be eaten all over the world.”
