A sports supercar was destroyed after dramatically catching fire on the A41 at the weekend.

The white Lamborghini Superleggera burst into flames along the Kings Langley stretch of the dual carriageway and was well alight by the time firefighters got there on Saturday morning.

The driver pulled over and leapt out of the vehicle – which costs close to £150,000 new – and escaped uninjured.

But his car was a smouldering mess by the time the flames had been extinguished.

Writing on social networking website Twitter, eyewitness Nathalie Chiara said: “I drove past this Lamborghini earlier on the A41... What a waste!”

Fellow Twitter-user Liam Ahern said: “Ended up completely burnt out. An expensive insurance job!”

Firefighters were called to the blaze – which was about half-a-mile from the M25 on the northbound stretch of the A41 – just before 8.50am. Police closed both lanes of the dual carriageway in that direction when they arrived.

Fire engines headed there from nearby bases in Kings Langley and Hemel Hempstead and had put the fire out by 9.20am.

Lane two of the carriageway was reopened at 9.30am and the Lamborghini was recovered at 11.15am.

But police spokesman Giles Cooper said: “There was significant damage to the road surface, so the lane remained shut until 1.30pm while the Highways Agency carried out repairs.”
