Councillor Tom Hunter-Watts has been elected as the new Mayor of Aylesbury.
Mr Hunter-Watts, a Conservative, was nominated by Aylesbury Town Council leader Mike Smith, whose Liberal Democrat party backed the move.
It is the first time the mayor has not come from the ruling party since the council was set up at the start of the millennium.
The new mayor’s election follows the death of Steve Patrick, who had held the role from May until he died last month. Mr Smith described it as ‘the election that none of us want to have’.
Mr Hunter-Watts, who represents Bedgrove, said: “Thank you all for electing me as Mayor of Aylesbury.
“I feel very honoured and very grateful.
“I want to pay tribute to my predecessor. Steve Patrick was a passionate advocate for Aylesbury. He gave everything he had of himself to this town and this council. He will not be forgotten.”
The new mayor also urged all parties to work together for the good of the town.
There were calls for a memorial to Mr Patrick to be set up in the town and this idea was supported by the leader.
