A former mayor was re-elected to Aylesbury Town Council in yesterday’s Elmhurst by-election.

Niknam Hussain retained the seat for the ruling Liberal Democrat Party with 584 votes on a turnout of 22.7%.

His nearest rival, UKIP’s Ann Day, received 324 votes.

Labour came third, the Conservatives were fourth and the Green Party candidate was fifth.

During his previous spell at the town council Mr Hussain was mayor in 2006/07 and has also been a district and county councillor.

He takes over the parish role from Lib Dem Iain Bozier, who left the council last month.
