Firstly on behalf of The Bucks Herald may I wish all our readers a very merry Christmas.

Whilst it may be the season to be merry it is also a time of reflection.

A chance for readers to look back on all those stories that were making headline news.

Here at Bucks Herald online we are doing just that, bringing you a snapshot of your favourite news and sport stories from 2013.

But for my final comment of the year, I would like to remember the bravery of our British troops serving in Afghanistan.

For 12 years families of forces personnel have faced up to Christmas’s without loved ones fighting in the warzone of Afghanistan. On Sunday the Prime Minister sent a Christmas message to the men and women reminding them of “the purpose of the mission”.

But behind the patriotic rhetoric there has been a large price to pay. Hundreds of UK soldiers killed and thousands wounded for a country many know nothing about.

Now things are about to change and we should be thankful most of our troops will be coming home safely next year.

Here in Aylesbury we have been doing our bit to support the armed forces. More than 9,000 showed their support with a tremendous event at Aylesbury Rugby Club in June plus there has been huge local support for the Help the Heroes charity.

In a few weeks time I am likely to be attending a reception here in Aylesbury for armed forces personnel returning from operations.

So things are already looking good for 2014.

In 1971 the great John Lennon wrote a song protesting the war in Vietnam. Today his words are as appropriate as ever.

I sign off with a selection from his song Happy Xmas (War Is Over).

So this is Xmas

And what have you done

Another year over

And a new one just begun

And so this is Xmas

I hope you have fun

The near and the dear one

The old and the young

A very Merry Xmas

And a happy New Year

Let’s hope it’s a good one

Without any fear

And so this is Xmas (war is over)

For weak and for strong (if you want it)

For rich and the poor ones (war is over)

The world is so wrong (if you want it)

And so happy Xmas (war is over)

For black and for white (if you want it)

For yellow and red ones (war is over)

Let’s stop all the fight (now)

A very Merry Xmas

And a happy New Year

Let’s hope it’s a good one

Without any fear

War is over, if you want it

War is over now

Happy Xmas
