Two massive cabbages won first prize at the County Show and at the end of the day the grower Marcus Powell gave them away.
Caroline Garstang, the lucky recipient of one of the giant vegetables, said she intended to make copious quantities of soup as well as bubble and squeak with the generous gift.
Mr Powell from Waddesdon said: “Showing is a hobby of mine. I grow a vast variety of vegetables and have showed here for the last three years.
“I got first prize for my cabbages because of their size, uniformity and condition.
“I grew them on my allotment. They were covered with netting and fed every week with a high nitrogen soluable food. I am very pleased with the result.
“One of these cabbages can provide 20 meals, but they can also be frozen.
“Mrs Garstang liked them so I gave one to her. I gave the other one away too.”
