Chip and pin coming to relaunched Aylesbury market

Shoppers may soon be paying for their fruit and veg from Aylesbury market via chip and pin or even their mobile phones.

Phase one of the market’s relaunch is taking place on May 14 when there will be new look stalls and awnings with future enhancements such as cashless payment due before the end of the year.

A new vintage and craft bazaar also opens on May 20 - to continue every Tuesday - with stalls selling jewellery, glassware, coins and handcrafted items.

On the same day as the bazaar opening, people will also be able to bring their treasured items along to be valued by antiques expert John Bly while vintage cars, bouncy castles, donkey rides and magicians will fill the historic square from May 14-28.

Aylesbury Town Centre manager Diana Fawcett said: “We’re trying to provide some Wi-Fi access for shoppers to pay through card or through their phones.

“However, that’s the next stage. We didn’t want the relaunch to be a one hit wonder.

“We continually review the way our market operates and work with the current traders to ensure the market can continue to grow.

“It has been wonderful to see how everyone involved with the market has worked together to help implement these changes as smoothly as possible.”

Brian Roberts, the council’s cabinet member for civic amenities, said: “For us, it is about demonstrating our ongoing commitment to the market, not just by improving the look and feel, but also by investing in the infrastructure.”

The relaunch co-incides with the nationwide Love Your Local Market Fortnight campaign.
