Aylesbury's El Quackico derby postponed for FIFTH time due to weather that really ought to suit ducks

Fierce rivals Aylesbury FC and Aylesbury United suffered more frustration last night (Tuesday) as their local derby was postponed for a FIFTH time due to a waterlogged pitch.

The referee called the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One Central match off 45 minutes before kick-off because heavy afternoon rain made one section of the pitch unplayable.

FC manager Steve Bateman said: “I can’t argue with the ref, it’s probably the right decision. Looking at it there is water and where it is sitting it is not going anywhere. At 2pm it was perfectly fine but we have had a deluge. It was enough to call it off.

“It is a shame because we had the same thing last Thursday but we managed to get away with it. It is literally the far side up to the halfway line, about 15 foot.

“We have had a problem with it in the last couple of weeks since the river came over and burst its banks. The rest of the pitch is firm so we have to go again.”

The fixture has been rescheduled for tomorrow evening (Thursday) with a 7.45 kick-off at Haywood Way. Bateman added: “There is more rain due so there is a possibility of having to push it back to next Thursday.”

The match was originally scheduled for Boxing Day but has since been postponed on a further three occasions because of bad weather and fixture clashes.

Last month, the match was abandoned at half-time because the floodlights at the ground failed, reportedly because a kettle was plugged in in the wrong place.

On the fixture backlog, Bateman said: “It has been a real challenge for us. All the sides we are playing, bar AU are either above us or around us so are chasing what we are chasing.

“It makes it tougher but we have to get on with it. The league will end on Saturday 23 and that is it. We just get on with it.”
