Buckingham MP and Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow says he feels it is unacceptable to criticise people over their height.

Mr Bercow, 51, who is 5ft 6 in tall added he has no problem with his own eight.

In an interview with The Times magazine Mr Bercow said: “Whereas nobody these days would regard it as acceptable to criticise someone on the grounds of their race, creed, disability or sexual orientation, somehow it seems to be acceptable to comment on someone’s height, or lack of it.

“Does it affect me, personally?

“Not at all.

“It’s just low grade, intellectually substandard and schoolboyish.”

Conservative MPs have publicly poked fun at Mr Bercow’s height in the past whilst he carried out his duties as Speaker of the House of Commons.

Prime Minister David Cameron also joked that the MP was one of the seven dwarves during a journalists lunch at Westminster.

Mr Bercow, who was elected as Speaker in 2009 added during the interview that he rejected claims from his wife Sally, that his new role had made him more attractive.

He said: “I have most certainly not become a sex symbol.

“She does have a very good sense of humour.

“We are not concerned by the often public scrutiny of our marriage.

“We have our own approach and we are perfectly comfortable in our own skin.”
