100k challenge comes round again for Emma in aid of Blind Veterans UK

A woman from Bierton is determined to finish a 100k walk for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, after she pulled out of last year's event just a couple of miles from the finish line.

Emma Donnan, 36, participated in the Blind Veterans UK 100k London to Brighton Challenge but unfortunately had to pull out after 85k.

When her housemate did the walk a few years back in the pouring rain Emma thought she was a fool for doing it. Yet this year she’ll be joining that same housemate.

Emma said: “I did the Blind Veterans UK 100k event for the first time last year after fostering dogs. I was walking a lot more and enjoyed it so I thought it would be good to take on the challenge.”

Emma signed up for the Blind Veterans UK 100k in 2015 after her housemate recommended them as the best organisers of long distance challenges.

She said: “I looked into Blind Veterans UK and they seemed like a good charity. Then during the walk last year I got on very well with a few of the blind veterans doing the walk and they were perfect examples of why the work Blind Veterans UK does is so important.”

Last year Emma walked up to 85k before she had to pull out due to injuries. She says: “This year I am determined to get to the end even if I have to crawl the last 15k.”

Registration for the 100k, which will kick off in Fulham on Saturday, July 2, is open with a registration fee of £62.50 for the 100km.

For those not wanting to walk the full distance there is also a relay option available for teams of four walking 25k each. Teams taking part in the relay have a registration fee of £110. The all-inclusive entrance fee for participants includes lunch, dinner and breakfast at three rest stops, snacks and refreshments along the route and a free event t-shirt.

The London to Brighton 100k challenge is Blind Veterans UK’s biggest annual fundraiser and takes participants from a starting point in south west London, along the banks of the Thames, through countryside paths in Surrey, Sussex and the North and South Downs to the charity’s centre in Ovingdean, Brighton.
