More Aylesbury bookmakers targeted by robbers
Betting shops in Aylesbury have been a prime target for robbers once again after a further two bookmakers were raided in the last week.
At about 9.30pm last Thursday, staff at Coral Racing in the Walton Court Centre, Hannon Road, had just closed the shop and were cashing up when two men smashed a window in the front door with a bat before stealing cash. Staff escaped injury by locking themselves in a toilet.
Then on Friday at around 5.45pm, a gang of four men dressed in black and wearing balaclavas, went into William Hill bookmakers in Jansel Square, Bedgrove, where they jumped on the counter and demanded that staff open the tills and safe.
An undisclosed amount of cash was taken before the gang made off in the direction of a nearby car park where they were seen running towards a silver Mercedes estate car.
Police believe another burglary, this time at Waddesdon Post Office, which took place just under an hour before the William Hill raid on Friday, could have been carried out by the same gang.
A call to police told of four men dressed in black and again wearing balaclavas, jumping over the counter and demanding money. However, after failing to steal anything, the robbers made off down Little Britain, near the entrance to the village.
Det Con Gary Huff, the officer investigating the post office and William Hill robberies, said: "We would like to speak to any witnesses who saw someone acting suspiciously or saw four men driving a silver Mercedes estate car in the area at the time. We are investigating whether these two robberies are linked."
The officer following up the Corals robbery, PC Carrie Ross, also made an appeal for witnesses to come forward.
"I'd like to speak with anyone who was in the area and who may have seen the men leave the shop and the direction they were heading in.
"Or perhaps someone saw two men making off in a vehicle. Any information at this time could be vital to this investigation."
Superintendent, Richard List, Aylesbury Vale's police commander, this week issued a stark warning to any would-be criminals in response to the incidents.
He said: "There have been a number of robberies in the Vale recently and my team and I take investigating these crimes and bringing those responsible to book very seriously.
"Those committing robbery are taking a huge risk because the penalties meted out to robbers by the criminal justice system are severe. The relatively low value of the typical haul makes this is a very stupid crime to commit."
Anyone with any information about these crimes is asked to contact Aylesbury police station on 0845 8 505 505. If you do not want to speak to the police, call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111. They don't need to know your name, just what you know.
