'Money is not being spent wisely on the Vale's roads'

A correspondent has criticised the spending habits of Bucks County Council's Highways department.

I am writing to you to voice my concern at the spending habits of Bucks County Council's highways department.

Driving around Buckinghamshire there are failed roads, potholes and patchwork roads yet Bucks County Council are choosing to spend their money on 'traffic calming' measures around Aylesbury town centre.

Last week your paper reported that around 40,000 was being spent on such measures on a road where no accidents have occurred in the last five years. There are also talks under way to reduce the speed limit on the ring road to 20mph. Then in a few weeks they will close one of the main parts of the ring road, Exchange Street, to widen the carriageway and install an additional pedestrian crossing on a road where two exist already.

Are they trying to drive commuters and business out of the area?

As both a biker and a car driver I have serious concerns about the state of our roads.

If you drive cross country from Buckingham to Aylesbury via the Claydons, most of the roads have failed. The parish councils in the area have been issued with a letter stating that the roads have gone past their life. Yet nothing is being done about these smaller roads.

With the main A roads becoming so congested, those in villages are using cross country routes into the town and are risking damage to their vehicles and in the case of bike riders, serious injury.

Simply putting a failed road sign at the end of these roads is not an adequate solution. It's about time money stopped being wasted on needless schemes and was put into the country roads. Bucks used to be a county that could be proud of its countryside drives – no longer is that the case. That's unless your drive takes you past Chequers, or areas where important council members live, where the Tarmac is almost perfect.

I have lived in Buckinghamshire all of my life and used to be proud of that fact, I am no longer proud of this fact and often apologise to visitors from other counties about the state of the roads.

I think it's about time the council members responsible for making

the decisions took the time to take a trip round the county without using A roads to see just how bad it is.
