Yoga has something for all

Clichéd as it may sound a yoga teacher with a class at Fairford Leys says it is beneficial for everyone from 18 to 80.

Vicki Austin, 34, has been teaching yoga for five years and has been practising it for more than 10 years.

She now teaches Hatha yoga, a holistic practice which deals with the physical and mental side of our being, encouraging the body and its systems to be balanced.

The postures help build strength and flexibility while reducing tensions in the body, encouraging it to relax.

The breathing techniques help to build energy, increase the flow of oxygen and blood to the vital organs. Relaxation techniques allow the body to absorb the work that came before and encourage the body to retain a feeling of calm at times of stress.

Mrs Austin opened the door to her classes at the centre on Hampden Square about two years ago.

The aim of her classes is to help people relieve every day tensions as well as back problems, muscle tightness and high blood pressure.

She started up this club after she had already set up other classes in the area.

Students from her other classes asked if she could set one up at the centre so she did.

"It is a lovely mixed group of men and women. A completely different way of exercising, better than going to the gym. It is a series of exercises which strengthens your breathing, increases flexibility and strengthens your muscles.

"At the end of the class we have a relaxation session which releases stress and tension from the body and the mind with concentration and focus.

"I started doing it when I was 18 years old but I dropped out when I went travelling to college. In 1997-98 I joined a class in Wendover and my teacher said I should do some teacher training but I thought I couldn't go back to being a student again.

"I was then made redundant twice in one year and it was almost like fate made its mind up for me as I was free to do the course. My teacher said life was trying to tell me something.

"The first class I started was in Lewknor near Thame and the other in Broughton Junior School in Aylesbury which has now moved to St John's School."

Yoga is a system of self development that originated in India thousands of years ago. It is referred to in its entire meaning as the science of healthy living and covers all aspects of life.
