‘Why would Aylesbury need a park and ride?’ Residents slam potential development

The developing site at Buckingam Park could also have a park and ride eventually

Residents have slammed proposals for a potential park and ride system in Aylesbury as ‘unwarranted’ and said town stores are of ‘dubious attraction to serious shoppers’.

Bucks County Council moved to save space at Buckingham Park for future use when the original plans for 850 houses and the park and ride were approved in 2004.

However, the plans have now reappeared before Aylesbury Vale District Council this month after developers, Hallam Land Management, opted to relocate the park and ride to the eastern side of the A413, Buckingham Road.

A development spokesman said: “It’s just about relocating. In effect we are reserving the land should the county council require it.”

One resident objecting to the plans wrote to the council: “The need for a park and ride into Aylesbury is highly questionable.

“The majority of traffic going south on A413 is going beyond Aylesbury and uses this road only as there is no other route for Buckingham.

“The shopping facilities in Aylesbury town do not warrant park and ride as it’s of dubious attraction to serious shoppers.

“There are mainly charity, low value and empty units, small versions of high street chains and layers of supermarkets, DIY and retail outlets such as Broadfields/Cambridge Street.

“I doubt if many people want to use a park and ride system for doing a weekly shop or buying larger DIY items.”

A Transport for Bucks spokesman said: “There is potential for a park and ride site which is part of our long-term strategy.

“If this is used it will depend on a number of factors including the impact of other potential developments, traffic levels and congestion on A413 over time and overall budget priorities.”
