We are back! Popular Race for Life to return

RACE for Life will return to Aylesbury this year – with all parking for the event taking place at Waddesdon Manor.

The race has taken place seven times, but was cancelled in 2010 and 2011 because of renovation works at Westcott Venture park – where some fundraisers would leave their cars and then catch a shuttle bus to the start line.

This year’s event will take place on June 24 and all entrants will be asked to park at the manor.

More than 3,000 women took part in the 2009 Race for Life, raising £220,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Organisers hope 2,000 mums and daughters will take part in 2012 and have set a lower ‘realistic’ fundraising target of £141,000 while the event is built back up.

Proceeds will be spent on research into the disease.

Event manager Gemma Cookham says: “The rallying cry ‘it’s all of us versus cancer’ has gone out to mums, daughters, sisters, grandmas and friends, encouraging them to sign up as soon as possible.

“Race for Life is non-competitive and all women are welcome, regardless of whether they are taking part on their own or as part of a group.

“We know many women want to take part in Race for Life but are worried they won’t be able to complete the course.

“We want to reassure them that Race for Life is not about being fast or fit. It is about us all coming together to fight cancer.

“Most women are able to walk five kilometres in an hour while chatting and having fun.

“The really startling fact is that in the same period of time, around five people in the South East will be diagnosed with cancer. Race for Life has an unforgettable atmosphere.”

“We are delighted Race for Life is returning to Waddesdon Manor. We hope women throughout the region will really show their support and sign up and encourage other women to do the same.”

This year Cancer Research UK aims to raise £55 million. The charity receives no government funding for its research, which helps 4,000 doctors, nurses and scientists fight 200 types of cancer.

Across the country there are now 240 races and during the past 18 years the series has raised £457 million. The entry fee is £14.99 for adults and £10 for girls aged under 16.
