Waterside plans starting taking shape at Aylesbury canal

Building work is finally under way on Aylesbury’s new supermarket, car park and hotel complex near the Waterside Theatre.

A lift shaft for the supermarket can be seen sticking out over the hoardings, which were put in place to make the area appear nicer while construction work takes place.

The 278-space car park, Waitrose and 80-bedroom Travelodge are all due to open at the same time in July 2013.

Building work on the £18 million project was due to start six months ago, but was delayed because of contamination problems with the land – which used to house a coal-fired power station and an oil depot.

At the time, Aylesbury Vale District Council said it was aware of the issue when contracts were signed two years ago.

The authority blamed complications with the Environment Agency’s requirements for delaying construction by six months.

Teresa Lane, head of communications, marketing and town centre management at the council, said: “The Waitrose and Travelodge development is very important to the town.

“We are pleased that work on the main construction is now well under way.

“One of the council’s aims is to attract new names to the town to broaden its appeal and offer residents and visitors more choice.

“The decision by Waitrose and Travelodge to open in Aylesbury is a sign of their confidence in the town which will help attract other new retailers and businesses.”
