Vale immigration figures double predicted levels

Aylesbury Vale’s immigration population is more than double what the Government predicted, according to revised calculations.
It was originally thought around 3,900 immigrants would settle in the district over a four-year period – it is now thought the figure was actually 8,100, as a result of changes made by the Office for National Statistics.
The number of foreign-born people coming to live, study or work in Britain is currently only based on a voluntary questionnaire carried out at ports and airports, while detailed estimates of where new arrivals settle have been calculated in different ways.
Mayor of Aylesbury Ranjula Takodra MBE says that while the figures were much higher than she anticipated, she can see many reasons why people would come to live in the Vale.
“I think it’s probably due to families already being here,” said Mrs Takodra.
“Aylesbury Vale is also a fantastic place to live in – and we are very multicultural, too. People feel welcome here, regardless of where they are from.
“I remember we had some French visitors come to Aylesbury who asked how we integrate so well, and don’t get the same problems they do.
“I also know a lot of Asian families come to Bucks for the schools, as many of them can be very strict about education and the schools are very good here.”
Meanwhile, UKIP leader for the Vale, Chris Adams, blames the high number of foreigners on the UK’s immigration policy.
“Because we are a member of the EU, members of all different states, except Bulgaria and Romania, are free to come and live and work here.
“High immigration numbers will leave our infrastructure splitting at the seams. We will have our transport system, schools and hospitals all overstretched if we are not careful.
“We need to bring in a proper permit system like in Australia, so if we need builders, for example, we can get them.”
