UPDATED: Stoke Mandeville Hospital at centre of Jimmy Savile abuse investigation as police chief confirms DJ was a predatory sex offender
More victims of Jimmy Savile have come forward claiming they were abused by the DJ while under the care of Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
Scotland Yard said it is now following more than 125 lines of inquiry across the country including two allegations of rape and six of sexual assault.
Commander Peter Spindler said he had contacted Stoke Mandeville Hospital and police would investigate whether the late DJ had abused patients there.
In a statement the hospital said it will cooperate fully with the police.
Mr Spindler told a press briefing: “Information is coming in, as we speak probably. The reality is this really has captured the public’s mind.
“We are getting calls from victims, from witnesses and third parties who believe they know something about it.
“At this stage it is quite clear from what women are telling us that Savile was a predatory sex offender.”
Allegations include:
> Two women have told the national press that Savile abused them at the hospital. The 13 and 15 year olds were both recovering on the children’s ward at Stoke Mandeville when Savile kissed them inappropriately.
> A man, 49, alleges he was fondled by the TV star in his Rolls-Royce at a Mandeville fundraiser when he was nine.
> There are also reports that Savile used to take young female hospital patients to his dressing room at the BBC after inviting them to watch Jim’ll Fix It. In one case a magazine journalist went backstage and witnessed a bald 14-year-old girl who was recovering from cancer lying on a bed with Savile. The DJ later threatened the journalist and told him not to publish anything about the encounter.
> A woman, Sarah, who appeared on the ITV documentary Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile said the presenter had put his tongue down her throat after a choir performance at the hospital when she was 15 and had tried to groom her.
Bucks Healthcare has said it is shocked by the allegations and will cooperate fully with the police inquiry. However, it would not comment on whether it will be changing the name of Jimmy’s cafe at the hospital.
The Jimmy Savile Stoke Mandeville Hospital Trust said it is considering changing its name and donating funds to child abuse charities ahead of a meeting on October 22.
Savile initially joined the hospital as a volunteer porter in 1979 and was widely known to roam the corridors at the hospital. He had his own flat at the hospital while he was helping to raise more than £40 million for the hospital.
