A former police detective said he raised fears about Jimmy Savile abusing patients at Stoke Mandeville Hospital but was told not to worry by a senior colleague.
John Lindsay said he twice reported incidents after nurses told him they were worried Savile was inappropriately touching young girls.
Thames Valley Police confirmed Mr Lindsay was a detective constable in the late 1970s and said they would be seeking to speak with him.
Mr Lindsay said during his time with the force he spoke to one of the nurses.
He told the BBC: “She and her colleagues were concerned about Savile’s attention to little girls in hospital.
“She said to me at the time they didn’t like Savile because he was he was touching little girls in hospital, not necessarily in a sexual way, but touching them and they were unhappy about the way he was going on.
“They told the little girls who were in hospital to stay in bed and give the impression they were asleep.”
Mr Lindsay said when he informed a senior colleague he was told: “Jimmy Savile is a high-profile man. He must be okay. He could not be doing anything irregular. Don’t worry about it.”
There are a growing number of claims that Savile groped children at the hospital. Already five women and one man have reported abuse by Savile. There are also claims the late DJ took patients into his dressing room at the BBC after inviting them to watch Jim’ll Fix It.
Thames Valley Police has said it will contact Mr Lindsay to see if any of the officers Mr Lindsay allegedly spoke to are still with the force. A professional standards probe could even be launched.
Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust has said it will consider holding its own inquiry – but only after the police has concluded its investigations.
