Unions join up to show solidarity against job cuts
TRADE unionists across Bucks have joined forces to battle jobs cuts with the forming of a new trades council.
The first meeting of the Buckinghamshire Trades Council will be held on March 8, with heavyweights from two national unions lined up to speak.
Kevin Courtney, deputy general secretary of the NUT teachers’ union, and Joe Simpson, assistant secretary of the POA, which represents prison service staff, are expected to attend.
The opening meeting is at Aylesbury’s Railway Club at 7.30pm.
Trade council president Steve Bell said: “We believe in solidarity, and that this will be key to developing successful campaigns to defend jobs, services and conditions for all working people, whether they be students, retired, out of work or in work.”
He said the formation followed demonstrations in November, when public service workers joined forces in Aylesbury and Wycombe to protest against cuts.
The meeting is open to the public, and the group says members will be out in force to raise the trade council’s profile.
