Town centre moves one step nearer to ‘Covent Garden’ vision

Plans to pedestrianise sections of Aylesbury are imminent, according to a senior cabinet member.
Aylesbury Vale District Council cabinet member for civil amenities Brian Roberts said consultation will begin on pedestrianising the Upper High Street and it is the first step of many.
Mr Roberts said: “We are moving forward. There will be a consultation period in the next four weeks.”
The move, if successful, will result in bollards being installed by WH Smith and preventing traffic passing through from 8am to 6pm seven days a week.
At the moment there is just a sign up which is regularly flouted according to Mr Roberts.
He added: “We don’t have the police force to maintain it. Yes it will disappear if they something but then 10 minutes later it’s back again.
“The safety of the public is primary. This will stop cars and taxis going through there at a ridiculous speed. We have full support from people.”
Mr Roberts has long wanted to introduce pedestrianisation to Aylesbury and previously told The Bucks Herald he hopes it will bring more of a ‘Covent Garden style’ to the town centre.
He added: “This will happen. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and we need to enhance the town centre. This will do it.”
The new plans, which could come into force by as early as the end of June, will mean there is a delivery spot behind Snappy Snaps.
But Mr Roberts said there were few companies in the Upper High Street which required vehicles for deliveries, bar Greggs.
It is something the councillor said would be consulted on with the businesses.
