A ‘flagship’ University Technical College will be built at Aylesbury College after plans were approved by the district council on Friday.

The multi-million pound college, one of just 12 across the country approved by the secretary of state, is due to open its doors to its first intake of 14 and 16 year olds in September 2013.

It will specialise in ICT and construction, hold 600 students at its maximum capacity in 2016, and employ 40 people.

Aylesbury College’s Pauline Odulinski said: “This is a very exciting opportunity for the district and the county.

“We will be part of a local flagship organisation.”

Employers are working with the college to design and deliver courses, and students will spend time working at businesses during their studies.

Councillor Netta Glover said: “This is the sort of education that’s been missing in this country for so long.

“It’s the sort of education that made Britain great in the past.”

Concerns about traffic congestion on the Oxford Road have been raised in relation to the plans, but it is hoped a new signalled junction will ease traffic problems.
