‘They obviously benefit from a single education system’: French hospitals better for having less foreign staff, claims Bucks councillor
Councillor Richard Pushman
The NHS could learn a thing or two from the French hospital system, a county councillor has claimed.
Health overview and scrutiny committee vice-chairman, Councillor Richard Pushman, said the French system benefitted from most staff being French nationals.
He also suggested people were missing out on jobs because of the variety of nationalities working for the NHS.
Mr Pushman made the comments in a discussion on the care of older people in hospital wards.
Speaking about a trip to a French hospital, he said: “All their staff were French nationals. How many millions are unemployed here?
“Their staff were well trained and obviously benefited from a single education system.”
Mr Pushman’s comments were challenged by Councillor Avril Davies, who said Britain had benefitted greatly from Commonwealth connections.
At the meeting councillors agreed report recommendations designed to improve the standard of care experienced by older people in Bucks.
The recommendations include the hospital trust ensuring staff include full details in patient handover notes relating to communication, feeding and toilet assistance and steps to improve staff training.
It is hoped the changes will make care more specialised for individual patients.
Mr Pushman said of the report: “It’s uncovered lots of unsatisfactory area, points we would expect to be put right at an early stage.”
