The good, the bad and the ugly of changing Aylesbury revealed in new book

A new book illustrating the changing face of Aylesbury is being released by The Bucks Herald’s Karl Vaughan.
Karl, who writes the newspaper’s weekly Back in Time feature, spent a year compiling Aylesbury Then And Now In Colour, his fifth book on the town’s history.
The hardback book contains more than 100 photos of old Aylesbury and what the same locations look like today.
He said: “It was quite a lengthy process picking out the ones which would make a good comparison shot.”
Karl took the comparisons shots himself – and in places such as Exchange Street found himself having to dash out in the middle of the road while the traffic lights were on red in order to get the perfect composition. One theme that runs throughout the book is the large number of attractive buildings which Aylesbury has lost over time.

“Aylesbury has lost absolutely loads of beautiful buildings when compared to other old towns. You can pick any period – the Victorians got rid of quite a few, and again in the 1930s and certainly in the 1960s we lost a lot.”
The 40 year old, who works at Pelican Print in Stocklake, particularly regrets changes made to Bourbon Street and Market Square.
“There used to be public baths in Bourbon Street, it was a lovely Victorian building.
“Then there was the Railway Hotel in Great Western Street, that was lovely as well, and the Bulls Head in Hale Leys – they’re usually pubs actually.”
Karl will be signing copies of the book at the Tourist Information Centre near The Kings Head pub on Saturday, October 6. The book is published by the History Press, priced £12.99.
It will be available online and at shops including WH Smith and Waterstone’s, as well as the tourist information centre.
