Tesco sees scents after pair kick up a stink about odour in Aylesbury store

TESCO customers kicking up a stink about an Aylesbury store’s odour have been reassured by supermarket bosses.
Unhappy shoppers have set up a Facebook campaign demanding an explanation for what they describe as a smell of sewage at Tring Road Tesco, which is believed to have been plaguing customers and staff for more than six months.
The group, entitled ‘Turdy Tring Road Tesco’, has quickly gathered pace with a membership of more than 100 people complaining about the stench since it was set up last Wednesday.
A spokesman from supermarket giant has, however, insisted that the issue, caused by a problem with drainage, has been resolved, having been fixed more than a week ago.
“We have had a small drainage issue in the store, which has now been resolved,” she said.
“We are sorry for any unpleasant smell which may be experienced while the air conditioning system clears.”
She added that if the smell still remains in store, it is as a result of the size of the shop, as it will take a while for the odour to leave the air conditioning system.
A Pitsone woman, who set up the online campaign with her father and who has asked to remain anonymous, says she has been amazed by the amount of response the page has received.
“It was set up more as a light-hearted thing at first,” she said.
“But then after just a day and a half more than 100 people had liked it.
“I travel all the way from Pitsone to do my shopping at Tring Road Tesco, and we just got fed up of constantly having to put up with the smell.
“We’ve got a lot of friends who use the store who have made complaints, we’ve made complaints, and so have some of the staff – but nothing got done.
“I think I might go to Asda from now on.”
Meanwhile, her father has said that while it should not have taken a Facebook campaign to resolve the issue, he is pleased it is now being looked into.
“I know Tesco received several complaints about it – why does it take a member of the public to form a Facebook campaign before anything is done about it?” he said.
“I don’t think it’s too much to ask for the public to be able to go shopping without being faced with the awful stench of faeces.
“Still, having been in on Tuesday morning and seen that it was 90 per cent better, I’m pleased.
“I checked all the isles, and found the smell only in one, whereas before it was throughout the store.
“It’s not a massive achievement to get Tesco to smell nice, but I appreciate that work went into getting rid of the odour, and I like to get things sorted out.
“I’m glad they took note of the campaign page and the comments.”

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 01:05 PMThank God it has been sorted after 6 whole months. In that time they could have built another Tesco. I am surprised that the Trading StandardsEnvironmental Health people did not get involved (at times the smell near the bakery uncovered products was unbearable and also near the meats). If you can smell **** then germs must have been present. If this was a small business they would have given them hellshut them down.

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 09:29 AM"All they are interested in is profit..." Can't be all they're interested in as every year they give away hundreds of millions of pounds to charity. They throw millions to help if there's been a humanitarian catastrophe, e.g. Haiti earthquake, 2004 Tsunami, 2011 Thailand floods, etc Plus they've already built several zero carbon stores in Britain and their aim is to become totally carbon neutral in the future. Would seem they care more than they're portrayed. Also, as the UK's biggest employer, not sure it's a good thing for us to be knocking them when we're seeing unemployment rising and rising. Think there's a lot more evil business out there. e.g. Military weapon producers, pharmaceutical companies, oil giants, etc even a lot of smaller businesses with little ethics who have no qualms polluting our rivers and countryside. Then there are our politicians and banks who seem to be destroying our economy by spending more than we can afford on everything - Their solution - hell - we'll just print more money! Over 300 billion pounds printed in the last year! Europe won't bail us out ifwhen our economy falls - Our PM has seen to that by walking away from a pact that would have offered some protection. Our banks would've had to pay a new tax that would've offered us a safety net. If a few million in bribes saves you from having to pay billions in a new tax, I think it's extremely likely this has gone down. Lot worse than Tesco out there friend! :-)

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 08:57 AMAs usual, you lot don’t seem to be able to take a hint and vote with your feet and shop elsewhere, even at another branch of Cohen’s. All they are interested in is profit, and the company as a whole seems to put off maintenance of anything until a gang of artisans arrive to do the lot in one hit and avoid a call out charge – that is the reason the smell has been there so long. Why haven’t you brought this to the attention of the Health Inspectors at the Council – or have they also been done away with?
