Slideshow: Thousands attend Courts Carnival

No-one could have anticipated the success of the Southcourt and Walton Court Carnival, which is thought to have attracted between 5,000 and 6,000 people to its afternoon and evening events.

The carnival hosted numerous entertainments, but the day was about highlighting the history of the area, recognising the achievements of the local skills workshops and bringing the community together.

The event kicked off with the carnival's procession that had 350 participants all wearing brightly coloured costumes, which brought to life the history of the local area.

During the afternoon the undisputed highlight of the day took place. Southcourt and Walton Court have a strong historical connection with the Second World War and the area around the Oxford Road was chosen by Winston Churchill to land bi-planes during the war.

Given this bit of famous local history, it therefore seemed appropriate for the Battle of Britain fly-past to stun the crowds when a Lancaster plane, a Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft flew past.

According to the carnival co-ordinator, Diana Fawcett, the aircraft trio normally only do three events a year, so for them to come to the carnival, was simply breathtaking.

Two large gospel choirs called Abundant Life and Jesus Cares entertained the crowds as they offered to sing at the event for nothing. Joining them in playing free performances well into the evening, were three other bands called the 'Nick Collard' band, 'Mirno' and 'The Unchosen' who were all from the local area.

Mrs Fawcett said: "We wanted to hold an event that would cross cultures and span generations.

"I want to say a huge thank you to all the people who took part in the procession and attended the event," she added.
