Slideshow: Ex-services club officially opens

The new Ex-Services Club in Walton Street, Aylesbury, was officially opened by chairman of the district council, Cllr Netta Glover.

Provided by developers Crest Nicholson as part of their deal to build on the land, the two-storey clubhouse is part of the major development programme in Walton Street, which will also lead to the provision of a multi-storey car park and town centre housing.

The state-of-the-art clubhouse contains a members' lounge and bar, games area and a large banqueting hall, and the improved facilities have enabled them to provide a new home for the county darts team and will also allow the venue to host Bucks Super League Darts.

The club, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, provides facilities for a number of services, including the Royal British Legion, Royal Naval Association and the Royal Green Jackets.

It is one of the largest clubs in the town with nearly 1,000 members.

George Bidgway, club chairman, said: "I would like to thank all the people involved with the building and the move to the new club, without them this could not have happened."

Tony Blackburn, from Crest Nicholson, added: "The Ex-Services Club in Aylesbury was in desperate need of modernisation and extensive repair. We have transformed the clubhouse and are thrilled with the results.

Not only will it provide improved facilities for the ex-servicemen and women of Aylesbury, its new look will also help to elevate the area."

The 525-space car park will be built mainly on the site of the old clubhouse, which is about 50 yards from the new building. It is expected to open in Autumn 2008 and work on its construction will commence shortly.

"This is another important milestone in the Waterside scheme and I'm very pleased that the project is moving forward on schedule," said Cllr John Cartwright, the leader of Aylesbury Vale District Council.
