Sir Jimmy Savile sex abuse allegations: What is YOUR verdict on ITV documentary screened last night?
Sir Jimmy Savile gets knighted, December 1990
An ITV documentary alleging that Sir Jimmy Savile sexually assaulted a number of young girls was screened last night.
The accusations on Exposure: The Other Side Of Jimmy Savile have sent shockwaves around the Vale where the late star was revered for his charity work.
One of the claims against the late Jim’ll Fix It star was that he raped a 15-year-old girl in the 1970s.
Another girl, Sarah, said he kissed her when she was 14 after a choir performance at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
She said: “Before I knew what had happened he’d stuck his tongue into my mouth. It didn’t seem to bother him that other people could have seen what he was doing.”
The programme followed former detective Mark Williams-Thomas as he interviewed a number of alleged victims and former colleagues of Sir Jimmy’s who claimed to have witnessed or known about the DJ sexually abusing teenage girls.
The Top of the Pops DJ joined the hospital as a volunteer porter in 1969 and helped raise more than £40 million for the spinal unit during his lifetime.
The accusations are likely to raise questions of Sir Jimmy’s legacy at the hospital, with a cafe named after the television personality and £1.6 million believed to still be in the Sir Jimmy Savile Stoke Mandeville Hospital Trust.
Bucks Healthcare Trust said prior to the show that it was ‘shocked to hear of these allegations’ and it was ‘unaware of any record or reports of inappropriate behaviour of this nature during Sir Jimmy’s work with the trust’.
The trust said it would cooperate with any investigation if required.
Sarah continued: “Looking back now, as an adult, I realise he’d been grooming me by calling me at home and arranging to come and see me in the choir.
“So many people looked up to him – including me. Yet he was trying to take advantage of a 14-year-old child.”
The Metropolitan police launched an investigation on Monday after a woman said she was raped by Sir Jimmy in London in the 1970s.
The BBC has said it will offer support to the investigation as some of the alleged incidents took place on its premises.
