Security is being tightened at the Aylesbury Young Offenders Institute.

The planned work includes the building of a new prison gatehouse, the demolition of temporary perimeter fencing and the putting up of a new perimeter wall and fencing.

A rear extension to the existing gatehouse is also being proposed, along with the installation of security grilles.

The work is being out so security can be beefed up, vehicle access made easier and the layout of the prison improved.

A planning application made for the work to be done is currently under consideration by Aylesbury Vale District Council.

Her Majesty’s Young Offenders Institute Aylesbury Governor, Kevin Leggett, said: “HMYOI Aylesbury plans to build an additional new gate lodge and also carry out alterations and repairs to Grade II listed parts of the prison which require planning permission.”

Mr Leggett also said the work will be funded by capital funding from the Prison Service, at no additional cost to taxpayers.

The site is a young offenders insitute which holds more than 400 long-term male inmates between the ages of 17 and 21, 10% of whom are currently serving life sentences.
