Sainsbury’s could be ‘one of town’s greenest buildings’
Gatehouse Road Sainsbury's
The new Sainsbury’s could be one of the greenest buildings in Aylesbury if given the go-ahead.
Plans for the 70,000 sq ft store include the use of ground source heating through a series of boreholes channelled underground to provide the store with heating, hot water and cooling.
It would also use air source heating which pumps extracts heat from the air to provide heating and hot water; cold air recirculation from chilled aisles to cool other areas; rain water harvesting to capture rain water to flush toilets; LED lighting for car park and external lighting; and a building management system that pre-authorises all use of energy in the store.
The firm also intends to maximise glazing and roof lights to allow natural sunlight into the store.
Sainsbury’s regional development executive, Tim Watkins, said: “Our new Gatehouse store includes some of the very latest sustainability measures to make an energy efficient store and one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in Aylesbury.”
Just over 200 people attended the public consultation meetings about the proposals on Friday and Saturday where the general response to the plans was positive, says the retail giant.
Sainsbury’s also presented the plans to Aylesbury Town Council on Thursday, where traffic, pedestrian access and heritage issues were raised.
