Renovation of Watermead hut costs the public £4.5k

Vandals who destroyed a security hut and used it as a toilet have landed taxpayers with a £4,500 bill.
This is according to Watermead vice chairman Adrian Schwab, who says the council had little choice but to work on the building after vandals even ripped out the roof and the floor.
Mr Schwab said: “I can honestly say the building was ghastly. The outside had even been covered in graffiti, which meant first impressions coming into Watermead really were not good.
“The office previously was in our clerk’s house, which obviously wasn’t ideal, so we needed a proper office.”
He added that the building has now been made extra secure to ensure no-one breaks in, as it will be used to store council documents.
The revamp took around two months, but Mr Schwab says the contractors were paid by the job – not by how long it took. He added that the money was not taken out of the parish council precept, funded by council tax, but paid for by income generated by the council for maintaining the Buckingham Park parish hall while the estate did not have its own authority.
There was however outcry from residents when the revamp was completed, as there was no public consultation.
When asked about this the chairman, Sue Severn, said: “We are an elected local authority. All our parish council minutes are open to the public.
“We are volunteers. We do nothing to stop people coming to our meetings.”
