Reaching the summit of personal fitness
Are you full of energy and vitality? Is your weight comfortable, are your muscles firm and toned and can you wear any clothes that you want? Can you wear swimwear with confidence and are you looking forward to showing off that body on your summer holiday?
If the answer to any of the questions above is no, a personal training company with a difference might be able to help.
Matt Walker founded Aylesbury-based Summit Personal Training with his partner Becky Tetley in February 2006. He told BH Health and Fitness that Summit has a rapidly increasing client base with ages ranging from 16 up to 73 years old.
He said: "Our success is due to the service we provide. We put the 'personal' back in to personal training. There are no crowded gyms, no expensive gym fees and no 'one size fits all' fit programmes. Summit trainers individually design every step of your health and fitness programme. All you need to do is turn up."
Summit serves a wide area including Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and parts of London. Matt said all the equipment is provided.
He explained: "We bring the whole gym to you and train in your home or outdoors. We use the outdoors as much as possible making us very unique in the fitness industry. Our fitness programmes involve functional training, injury prevention and stamina building. We focus on core training and flexibility as well as strength and endurance.
"We are passionate about making our programmes fun and enjoyable, which is why we include outdoor activities such as cycling and Nordic walking and other exercises such as boxercise. We also offer a sports and aromatherapy massage and nutritional advice."
Matt said his enthusiasm for health and fitness started from an early age, encouraged by his parents, both of whom are PE teachers.
He said: "They instilled the importance of a healthy lifestyle. After being chosen to represent the county in tennis, football and rugby and representing the south of England for athletics, I began my career in health and fitness as a snowboard instructor."
Matt's next mission was joining the British Army where he commenced basic and phase two training and won an award for the 'Best at Physical Training'. He then volunteered for Special Forces Commando Training, regarded as the world's toughest training and selection process. He served in the Army from 2000 until 2006.
On leaving the Commando Regiment Matt retrained as a personal trainer. He told BH Health and Fitness he thoroughly enjoyed the course which gave him a deeper insight into how complex it is to have total health.
Matt is also involved with a company called British Military Fitness. This company was founded six years ago and began in Hyde Park in London. These are military style fitness lessons taught by only military fitness instructors. Matt stressed these sessions are not 'Bad Lads Army Boot Camp'.
He said: "It doesn't matter how unfit you are as there are different groups for different levels of fitness. Our most popular client happens to be my own mum who is 52 years young. She takes part in them three times per week and just loves them. There is no screaming and crawling though mud just hard work and fun."
Matt teaches these lessons in London's Hyde Park, Battersea Park and Clapham Common Park. However, due to the success of the company and the ever growing client base, he will be running more classes at South Park in Oxford where he will be the lead instructor. Classes are due to start soon and will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.
