Public meetings are taking place tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday seeking locals’ views on the Sainsbury’s plans.
There has been a mixed response from residents on Bicester Road, who will be facing the 70,000 sq ft Gatehouse supermarket.
Kathleen Ford, who has lived on the road for eight years, says she would have much preferred the residential plans for the site, posed around five years ago, as the traffic along the Bicester Road is bad enough already.
She said: “I’m not particularly bothered about a supermarket, as long as I don’t have to look out on to it. I am, however, concerned about the noise it’s going to create with the lorries, the unloading and the traffic. Also – will it be 24 hours? That’s a lot of light that will be shining into my bedroom window if it is.
“I like Sainsbury’s, it’s my shop, but I don’t think I want it opposite my house.”
Bicester Road resident Maciej Liberra echoed Kathleen’s views, adding that he was concerned the development would devalue his house, which is up for sale.
“It’s going to be massive,” he said.
“I would definitely prefer it to be residential there. I’m certainly not going to be happy if it’s 24 hours – just think of the disruption if we have young people visiting the store to buy beer at 2am. It’s not good at all.”
But Edward Anthony, who has lived on the road for 25 years, says he is ‘quite happy with the plans’.
He said: “I’ll probably use it, I quite like Sainsbury’s.
“I’m not really worried about the view, although I would obviously like to see it set back a bit.
“It would, however, be nice to have a petrol station. Why isn’t there room on that site?”
And fellow resident Kirk Sauro, who has lived in Aylesbury all his life, says he thinks the plans are a ‘good idea’, as they will be creating 300 new jobs in the town and more competition for Tesco.
The meetings are tomorrow (Friday) at the district council’s Gatehouse Way offices from 4-7pm and on the car park of the Buckinham Street Sainsbury’s store from 10am to 2pm on Saturday.
