Plans to double the size of Furze Down School and create new sports facilities have gone on show.

The £8.7 million plans involve completely rebuilding the Winslow-based school.

The new facility would provide places for 140 pupils aged up to 19 and create eight new specialist nursery places.

If approved, after the plans are submitted in October, the new main building would open by around Easter 2014.

The curved design of the plans will allow the new structure to be built before the existing buildings are demolished.

Architect David Morriss said: “We’re trying to wrap our new building round the existing building until the new building is finished.”

After that, staff and students would decamp into the new building so the old ones can be knocked down and the landscaping completed.

“The design allows staff and students to move as freely as possible into the landscape,” said Mr Moriss, who also said he was trying to make the building ‘as green as possible in as many ways as possible’.

He says the plans also offer improved traffic flow and a significant increase in on-site parking to alleviate congestion in Verney Road.

Funding is being provided by Bucks County Council and housing developer contributions under Section 106 agreements.
