Personality the key to getting a job, says Bucks skills boss
Councillor Mike Appleyard
More should be done to ensure Bucks children gain essential ‘life skills’ that can help them get a job, rather than just academic qualifications – so says the man in charge of the county’s education.
Councillor Mike Appleyard, Bucks County Council deputy leader and cabinet member for education and skills, said students across the region need to be able to put information on their CVs that make them stand out to employers, particularly in the difficult current economic climate.
Mr Appleyard said the change would not happen overnight, but work would be done to get the right ethos among schools, colleges, and students.
He said it would involve more pupils tackling community work and taking part in activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Mr Appleyard said: “What I’m interested in doing is making sure that our students in secondary schools are given the best possible opportunity to get a job.
“A qualification just gets you an interview. What gets you a job is your personality.
“You have got to show you are prepared to get stuck into something and stick with it for a while.”
