‘One council to cover north Bucks, one to cover the south and scrap the rest’: Councillor outlines unitary authority plan

Bucks councils ‘need to get their act together’ if they want to form a unitary authority, a district councillor has said.

At a full Aylesbury Vale District Council meeting last week a number of councillors raised the idea of merging district and county councils to save money.

Councillor Peter Cooper, Independent, said he has being working on the idea for a number of years but that it was the first time such public support had been shown for it by colleagues.

With Government grants set to fall further, Mr Cooper sees going unitary as a key way to save money, suggesting the current system of four district councils and one county council be reduced to two, one covering the north and one the south.

He said: “It would save money in terms of the number of members and staff and assets. On top of that people would know where to go to ask a question of their council.”

Applications are not currently being taken for new unitaries but Mr Cooper said Bucks councils need to have the debate now and be ready to apply when the time comes.

He said: “The preparation work will probably take a couple of years. We need to be working on it now so when it does become possible we are ready to go.”
