THE date for the town’s biggest annual charity event has been announced – and this year it has an Olympic twist.

Aylesbury’s Midnight Walk, in aid of the Florence Nightingale Hospice, is set to take place on July 14.

And this year walkers are being encouraged to go the extra mile to mark the Olympics, with a choice of two routes – a six-mile route and, new for this year, a ‘half marathon’ 13-mile route.

Aylesbury Vale’s only Midnight Walk has so far raised over £120,000 with money still coming in from 2011.

The event is designed to entice new walkers of all ages, as well as those who have taken part in the event for the last two years.

Money raised from the walk helps support a complete care package for local families affected by life-limiting illnesses.

The hospice provides a 12-bed in-patient unit and day hospice, a children’s hospice at home team, a Lymphoedema clinic and a specialist community nursing team.

“This is our third Midnight Walk and is the biggest fundraising event of the year for the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity,” said Karen Shardlow, development and events manager at the fund.

“We really want to see as many walkers taking part as possible, from familiar faces to some new ones.

“The atmosphere is truly electric, and everyone has lots of fun despite a few aching limbs and sore feet at the end.

“If you are looking to take on a challenge in Olympic Year ladies, this is definitely one for you!”

And the Midnight Walk needs men too.

The charity will be launching a special challenge to recruit 100 male volunteers to help with marshalling the two routes on the night, event set-up and registration, and to help test out the new 13-mile challenge prior to the big night.

Registration for the event which saw 571 ladies pounds the streets of Aylesbury last year – pink bunny ears in tow, costs £15 to include entry, a Midnight Walk 2012 T-shirt, a medal on the night and a well-deserved breakfast on completion of the challenge.

The walks over the last 2 years have been so much fun - and so friendly on the way round chatting to such a wide range of women. Everyone should sign up for this year's event - looks like the biggest and best yet!
