Odeon cinema wins praise for disabled access
THE Odeon cinema in Aylesbury has been praised by disability campaigners for offering easy access by wheelchair and good, comfortable views.
Twins Judith and Laura Merry, from Worminghall, are members of the young disabled campaigners’ group Muscular Dystrophy Campaign’s Trailblazers, which visited 125 cinemas to report on issues faced by disabled customers.
The Trailblazers found that many cinemas offered poor views of the screen, uncomfortable seating areas, poor awareness of disabilities from cinema staff and no online ticket service for disable customers.
However the Merry’s found that the Odeon in Aylesbury offered a good service to disabled customers.
Judith said: “Disability awareness training amongst cinema staff is still so inconsistent between venues.
“A lot of people think that this kind of training is just a box ticking exercise, but actually it can make a huge difference. While it is difficult for some older cinemas to improve physical access, every venue has the ability to offer good service to disabled people.”
