NOW WITH VIDEO: Flat’s da Vinci masterpiece is food for thought
A VALE man has created a brilliant replica of da Vinci’s Last Supper in his one-bedroom housing association flat.
Ray Charman, 75, of Bankside in Wendover, recreated the masterpiece as a joke to amuse his retired friends in the shared housing support scheme.
Unlike the original 15th century painting, which is 29 ft wide, Mr Charman’s work measures 14 ft. He said he left 18 inches behind the door so his dressing gown doesn’t rub off Simon the Zealot when he walks in.
He said: “It was all intended as a joke but you can say the joke is on me, because I have now spent 100 hours on it since October and it is still not finished. It is maybe 99 per cent complete and I haven’t got a clue what to do with it now.
“Someone suggested as a joke that I get it listed.”

Mr Charman explained that three months ago he started collecting scratch cards and joked to friends that he was making a mosaic of the Last Supper.
Last week he showed the fake work to his friends in Bankside, which he says caused ‘a vague sense of disappointment’.
“Then I said ‘oh, by the way I have done a rough sketch’.
“I brought them into my bedroom and bowled them over.
“Although one man joked ‘why couldn’t you just bring it up to the common room so we can all look at it.’”
