New university gets the building process under way

Building work on a new £10.4 million college began this week.

The University Technical College for 14 to 18 year olds specialises in ICT and construction and will be located next door to Aylesbury College.

Principal Bev Flanagan took up her post in September and is now busy promoting the college in time for when it opens its doors to students in September 2013. Already more than 20 students have signed up for next year.

Mrs Flanagan met Lord Baker of Dorking who chairs the Baker Dearing Educational Trust and promotes university technical colleges.

Lord Baker said: “It is good news that Aylesbury will have a UTC opening in 2013 – good technical, practical, hands-on learning alongside academic subjects leads to jobs, apprenticeships and university.”

Mrs Flanagan added: “It was a great pleasure to meet with Lord Baker, who is responsible for the idea of the UTC. He is a great believer in this form of education and follows our progress closely.”
