Mums’ US storm fears

The mothers of two children on a school trip in New York have spoken of their agony during ongoing superstorm Sandy.

Lib Dem leader at Bucks County Council Mary Baldwin, of Nelson Terrace, Aylesbury, said she was ‘so scared’ when she first saw the news on Sunday.

She was then unable to contact her son on Monday when the storm struck.

She said: “By Sunday I was really frightened.

“I was so scared he might not get evacuated, or that he might get separated from the group.

“Also, although he’s a sensible lad, he’s still young so I was worried he might get excited and want to go and see it.

“Luckily my lovely family and friends kept me sane and the school helped a lot.

“It’s just such a relief to know he’s OK now, and that he wasn’t scared.”

Alex is currently on an arts and photography trip with the Misbourne School with 30 other pupils. They were due to return home yesterday, but have had to stay another week due to flight problems.

Meanwhile, Suzi Kidson’s daughter Jessica is also on the trip. She too was unable to contact her daughter on Monday.

She said: “I saw the news and I couldn’t help but think the worst. My husband said to me, ‘you could have all the money in the world, but at this moment in time you still couldn’t go and get your daughter. It was all entirely in God’s hands. I didn’t sleep on Sunday night. I just stayed up and watched the news. I couldn’t sleep without knowing what was going on.

“I finally managed to get hold of her on Tuesday and she said the power had gone in the lifts and that McDonalds and KFC had no food and the shops were empty. I think it did scare them.

“The school really has been wonderful though. There’s 31 children and three teachers and they’ve been fantastic.”
