MPs will ‘end the question marks’ over HS2

PARLIAMENT’S all-party group for high speed rail has announced it will independently assess the HS2 plans to ‘end the question marks’ and make ‘100 per cent certain’ it is a good proposal.
It comes just days after 18 councils which oppose the plans issued a final warning to the government, vowing to pursue legal action if ministers plough ahead with the scheme.
The all-party group is made up of MPs who support the concept of high-speed rail. Graham Stringer, the Labour MP for Blackley and Broughton and co-chairman of the group, said: “At a time of massive job losses and economic uncertainty, this inquiry will provide conclusions to help us best plan for future passenger demand on the railways.”
Stuart Andrew, Conservative MP for Pudsey and fellow chairman of the group, said: “This inquiry will study in detail the passenger demand forecasts and all of the options that have been put forward to relieve our creaking railway infrastructure.
“Despite the government giving the green light to HS2, it is imperative that we feel 100 per cent confident. This inquiry will put an end to any question marks that may remain, and establish the best way of creating long-term capacity on Britain’s railways”.

This week Martin Tett, leader of Bucks County Council and chairman of the 51m group of 18 authorities which oppose HS2, called for the government to ‘invest in our existing rail and road infrastructure across the entire country’ rather than HS2.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 08:33 AMOh thats good, so David Lidington is going to get off the fence and tell us he is going to vote against HS2 at the first opportunity or he is going to put two fingers up to his constituents and look after himself......... excuse me if I don't hold my breath.

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 01:50 PMIt's PR spin. The Parliamentary Group *for* High Speed Rail is hardly independent. And the Government Register of Parliamentary Groups shows they receive services from Westbourne Communications - the same PR firm that is behind the Campaign for High Speed Rail run by Prof David Begg.

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 01:36 PMSounds like a group of MP's that will use our money to make up some bull droppings that they think they can sell to the public and make this gross misuse of public money palatable.

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 12:14 PMHmm, reading those quotes "...At a time of massive job losses and economic uncertainty" and "..establish the best way of creating long-term capacity on Britain’s railways" sounds like a fait accompli to me.
