More Jimmy Savile revelations on the way in Panorama special

The sex abuse scandal surrounding the late Jimmy Savile will take another turn when a new programme investigating the BBC airs tonight at 10.35pm on BBC1 (Monday).

After ITV documentary Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile was shown earlier this month the number of allegations against the Stoke Mandeville Hospital fundraiser has escalated.

The television presenter helped raise more than £40 million for the spinal unit at the hospital but several people, including former patients, have come forward accusing him of molesting them.

Scotland Yard are now following more than 450 lines of inquiry and it is believed there could be more than 200 victims.

The programme, Jimmy Savile: What the BBC Knew is a Panorama special and is likely to investigate why a Newsnight probe into several accusations was shelved last December.

Already editor of Newsnight Peter Rippon has stepped aside as a result of the increasing pressure.

There are significant fears that the BBC was aware of Savile’s activities and the corporation is currently holding two of its own investigations.

Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust has said it will wait until the conclusion of the Scotland Yard investigation before deciding on whether to hold its own inquiry.
