Aylesbury is getting £10,000 towards a scheme to encourage new retailers into the town.

The money for the Retail Lift Off project has been awarded by the government. It is designed to allow retailers to continue with the work that would have taken place if Aylesbury had been named a Portas Pilot town earlier this year.

Under the scheme, new traders will be given short-term reduced-price market pitches or shop spaces. They will also get free access to legal and financial advice from a business buddy in the town.

Existing retailers will have the final say on which start-ups or new firms are given the special treatment, to ensure the town offers a broad range of shops.

New retailers who are chosen to take part in the scheme must have a connection to the town.

The first traders to be given a space are expected to pop up on Aylesbury Market in December.

Town Centre Manager Diana Fawcett said: “We are delighted that we are now fully funded for our project.

“The project will be available to applicants shortly and we look forward to working with our new traders to enhance our shopping offer within the town.”

Aylesbury MP David Lidington said: “This is excellent news for Aylesbury and the town centre partnership’s efforts to revitalise the town centre.

“I know from discussions I have had with the town centre partnership that there is already considerable interest from potential traders and I look forward to seeing their businesses up and running.”
