Magistrate who survived knife attack while working as a teacher to stand as Lib Dem police commissioner candidate in Thames Valley
Professor John Howson
A magistrate and academic who was once stabbed in a classroom has been selected by the Liberal Democrats to run in the first police commissioner election in the Thames Valley.
Professor John Howson, who unsuccessfully stood for Parliament in the 2005 general election, said he was ‘delighted’ to be selected to stand for the post.
He said: “This position is a pivotal role in the fight against crime.”
The Conservatives will be represented by Anthony Stansfeld in the November 15 elections, while Labour has nominated Tim Starkey.
Police and crime commissioners will replace police authorities, with those elected having the power to hire and fire chief constables, set the budget and decide force priorities.
Professor Howson has served as a magistrate for 22 years, having spent 15 years training teachers and is a former Government adviser.
While teaching in Tottenham in the 1970s he was attacked by a former pupil and left with three stab wounds and a broken nose, but made a full recovery and was back teaching in six weeks.
Professor Howson: “I was extremely lucky.
“I understand what it’s like to be a victim of crime.”
