Lib Dem views to be voiced through General Election

Liberal Democrats in Speaker John Bercow's Buckingham constituency have chosen their spokesman for the General Election.

Over recent years a convention came about that meant major parties did not stand against the Speaker of the House of Commons, but they can put forward a parliamentary spokesman.

Local party activists within both the Conservative and Liberal Democrat groups have raised concerns that they will be unable to express their views at the election because the Speaker's seat is historically impartial.

Marie-Louise Rossi has been chosen by the Lib Dems in Buckingham to put forward their manifesto.

She said: "One can observe that in recent elections it's only been the very small parties that have stood against the speaker and one can only summise that they are trying to get a bit of publicity.

"The reason is that the party would like to have a specific parliamentary voice to promote and articulate the party policies that are in the manifesto."

Speaking about why she was chosen, she said: "I suppose part of the reason is my background in the European movement and UKIP has put forward its former leader.

"We are the most pro-EU of all the parties and would like a voice against UKIP among other reasons.

Ian Metherell, chairman of the group, said: "We are delighted that Marie-Louise has joined us as our parliamentary spokesperson.

"She is highly experienced in politics and the wider business and financial world.

"She will be a great asset in our campaign over the coming months."

Ms Rossi was Lib Dem candidate for the cities of London and Westminster in 2005 and a local government candidate in Westminster in 2002 and 2006.

She has worked in insurance for 30 years and specialised in risk management, financial services regulation and other areas.

More recently she has helped set up and advise new businesses in London and the south of England.
