Kind-hearted Christmas helpers needed by church

St Mary’s church is appealing for volunteers to help provide the annual Christmas lunch for those who would normally spend the day alone.

Around 80 people enjoy the Aylesbury-based church’s annual meal thanks to the team of helpers.

Church spokeswoman Kim Walter said: “Are you tired of the commercialism of Christmas? Do you want to do something different this year?

“Christmas is the time for giving. Why not embrace the true spirit of Christmas this year by giving your time to help at the St Mary’s community Christmas lunch.

“On Christmas day approximately 80 people of all ages who would normally spend the day alone come together to enjoy a traditional lunch.

“The lunch is a huge undertaking and is only successful because of volunteers offering to give their time – to wrap the presents, set up and decorate the tables, peel the sprouts, serve the lunch, help with entertaining and dare I mention the washing up.

“It’s not all hard work there is plenty of time for volunteers to chat to people who would other wise be spending a lonely day by themselves, and to join in the festive fun having a great day themselves and making a real difference to the community.

“Volunteers are needed from 11.10am until 3pm and you can give as little as one hour but you will get more out of the day if you can do more.”
