Independent candidates to back new unitary authority for Bucks

A group of independent candidates planning to stand in May’s county council elections have vowed to fight for a new unitary authority.
The six men will be standing around Bucks and although they may not agree on everything, they all want the number of councils cut.
Peter Cooper, Chris Richards, Mark Bale, Alan Turner, Darren Hayday and Rikki Akhter Hussein say standing as independents will allow them to better represent voters and not be at the mercy of party whips.
They were brought together after hearing each others’ views on creating a unitary authority.
Mr Cooper, who is standing for the Wing division, said: “The idea has wide appeal, even within the political parties, but unfortunately they seem to have a vested interest in keeping their current positions.
“It’s almost inevitable that it will happen one day.
“If local government grants are completely cut by 2020 there’s going to have to be a way of saving enormous amounts of money and you won’t be able to cut services any further.”
Mr Richards, a former Tory standing in Wendover, said: “There is great potential for releasing extra staff and resources into the delivery of services.”
The group hope to encourage more independent candidates to stand in the election.
The elections will take place on May 2.
